I love watching the Academy Awards each year, call it a guilty pleasure of mine, kind of like cheesecake. It is a rare year when I have actually seen all of the movies nominated for Best Picture, but I like to see if I can guess which ones the Academy is going to pick based on what I’ve read about the movies.
Punchbowl had some great background on the Academy Awards ceremony today. Did you know that the first Academy Awards ceremony took place on May 16, 1929? According to Punchbowl, it was a private dinner party with less than 250 guests in attendance and the tickets cost $5 per person. The ceremony lasted fifteen minutes! Here we are, 86 years later, and on average 40 million people tune in to watch the live ceremony.
All About Oscar
Do you know the nitty-gritty about Oscar? The trophy for the Academy Awards is actually a knight gripping a crusader’s sword standing on a reel of film. The film reel has five spokes which represent the original branches of the Academy: actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers. The statuette is officially known as the Academy Award of Merit, but was nicknamed Oscar in the 1930s. Much easier to say, don’t you think? Each individual Oscar costs $500 to produce and weighs approximately 8.5 pounds.
Academy Awards Night Fashion
I love seeing all of the gorgeous finery that the stars wear each year. These are some of my favorites from the 2014 Academy Awards – you can find all of them on The Oscars website. I gaver Kerri Washington and Sandra Bullock top honors for their dresses last year. To me, Oscar fashion should combine three factors – elegance, glamor, and timeless beauty. These two women have all three in the gowns that they choose last year. I cannot wait to see the beautiful gowns that they have chosen for this year.
