Having Trouble Falling Asleep? Melatonin Could Be the Answer You Seek

Have trouble falling asleep? Melatonin could be the answer you seek.

Disclosure: This post was created in partnership with Mom Buzz Media. I received this product free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion.

For the past ten years or more, I have been a champion of melatonin. Having a child diagnosed with ADHD at the age of five, you soon learn that sleep is a precious commodity of which you will get even less of with an ADHD child.

Have trouble falling asleep? Melatonin could be the answer you seek.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) causes your child to go-go-go, all day long. Jumping, playing, bouncing, running, they can go from the moment they wake up until … forever. There are days when you think they will never sleep, and there are those children who can literally survive off of one to two hours of sleep and they are ready to go at it again because of their ADD and/or ADHD.

As a parent, however, you know that not only is that not good for them it definitely is not good for you either. You cannot be at your best and on alert to the shananigans your hyperactive child can get into. One of the reasons that they are so active, even when it is time for bed and the rest of the world is settling in for the night, is that their brain does not produce a required amount of Melatonin to signal that it is time for bed.

Our family physician suggested Melatonin when Jonathan was younger, and it has been a part of our nightly routine ever since. It takes a bit to determine which dosage is right for your child, but the great thing about Melatonin is that it is non-habit forming, and does not leave you feeling sleepy or sluggish the next morning.

Natrol Melatonin 1mg Strawberry Flavored tablets

I am extremely pleased to tell my readers about Natrol® Melatonin Fast Dissolve! We have tried a variety of different types of melatonin and trust me – they are not all made the same. Some have an absolutely horrible taste, some just smell awful. Both of my boys were thrilled when I presented the strawberry flavored tablets last night before bed. Not only did they smell great when you opened the bottle, they tasted good too!

Even children without ADHD have a difficult time falling asleep at times. A fun day at the amusement park, a trip to the zoo, anxiety over a test at school tomorrow – any number of reasons can cause your little one to toss and turn and be unable to have a restful, relaxing sleep. Melatonin helps to establish those normal sleep patterns and promote a more restful, relaxing sleep (and better overall health). Natrol® Melatonin Fast Dissolve is a drug-free, fast-acting sleep aid with a delicious strawberry flavored tablet meant to dissolve quickly for fast results.

As I stated above, you need to determine the amount your child needs. We recommend taking 1 tablet 20 minutes before bedtime. For best results, allow the table to naturally dissolve in your mouth before swallowing.

My own children take a higher dosage, but that has been prescribed by their family pediatrician. If you have any questions, check with your family physician before starting any medication.

  1. Very well-researched post! This is the first I've read about melatonin as an aid for ADHD insomnia, though I've read some even more startling studies about blue-blocking glasses for ADHD insomnia. According to one study, wearing the blue-blocking glasses pretty much "cured" the ADHD insomnia for the majority of participants. "researchers found that the subjects’ sleep scores had improved in every area of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index…The most important data might be the reduction of sleep latency by over 43 minutes." I review some popular blue blocking glasses on my blog here: http://www.lighttherapyreviews.net/amber-sleep-gl

Here is a summary I found of the ADHD study: http://www.somnilight.com/attention-deficit-disor

    Interesting stuff!

    1. Ditto! I found your articles interesting as well. My son is one of those “late night gamers” mentioned in the article – he just can’t seem to cut it off some evenings and I know that it messes with his sleep quality. Thanks for the info on the glasses!
