It’s the new year again, and like a lot of people you may be thinking about taking up a new fitness class to get you in shape for the coming summer. After all, it’s never too early to start. However, many classes just seem like such a slog, don’t they? Spin classes? Yawn. Aerobics? Boring. How about a dance class, instead?
Dance fitness classes don’t require to have any specific skills in dance, and you certainly don’t need to show up in your sparkly cocktail dress and high heels. All you need are some comfortable clothes and a willingness to get involved. Still wondering what kind of dance class is right for you? Check out the list below and pick the style that you feel suits you best.
Zumba
Developed during the 1990’s, Zumba has recently taken off as the must try dance class. If you’re looking for a class that can offer something different in every session, then this is for you. Zumba incorporates a huge array of musical styles, including samba, flamenco and hip hop, and promises to teach you dance moves that you can use out on the town on Saturday night. Whether you’re looking to tone up, lose weight, or you’re looking for a class for older people or for kids, Zumba has something for you. There are even a range of video games available that use motion tracking software that allow you to get fit in the comfort of your own home.
BodyJam
BodyJam is a cardio workout that brings together the newest dance moves with the hottest tracks in the charts, creating an experience that makes you feel as though you’re dancing in a music video. Each session can burn up to 545 calories, but instructors promise that you’ll be having so much fun you won’t even notice how hard you’re working. BodyJam isn’t about perfection, so you can take part safe in the knowledge that whatever you can do, it’ll be good enough for your instructor.
Bokwa
The latest contender to Zumba’s throne is Bokwa, a blend of hip hop and step aerobics developed in 2012. If it sounds too complicated, don’t worry. The steps are actually based on English letters; which participants can then jazz up with their own freestyle moves. As a dance class, it’s more structured than others styles, which may not be for some people. However, if you want to get involved but would like a bit of hand holding, this could be perfect.
Bollywood
Another newcomer to the dance scene, Bollywood dance classes blend traditional Bollywood music and current top 40 hits to create a class that isn’t like anything else. Companies such as Bombay Jam are creating dance workout classes that are easy to follow, yet a ton of fun to take part in. With such a unique fusion of styles, it’s sure to give your workout routine a shake up.
Belly Dance
Belly dance is a traditional pastime that has been given a modern twist by dance class instructors. This style of dance can strengthen your core muscles and help you lose weight, as well as being a huge amount of fun to take part in. The NHS also note that belly dance can help lift your mood thanks to the combination of music and dance, so if you want to add a bit of color and fun to your January, you know what to do.
Ballet
You may have dreamed of dressing up like a prima ballerina as a child, so why not indulge that little girl now and sign up for a ballet class? As Prevention notes, ballet looks graceful and fluid when performed well, but in fact some of the more advanced moves require incredible strength and control. If you want a more structured dance class, or want to improve your posture and flexibility, ballet could be the way to go.
Latin
Do you prefer to work out with a partner as opposed to going it alone? Do you love shows like Dancing With The Stars and think that you could do what they do? If that’s the case, Latin dance classes could be for you. Latin requires a lot of fast dance steps and works lots of muscle groups, meaning you get a fantastic all body workout. Plus, if you’re looking for something that you and your partner can enjoy together, why not sign up for Latin classes? It’s healthier and a lot more fun than sitting on the couch every evening.
This is only a taste of what’s out there in terms of dance fitness classes. If your new year’s resolution was to get out there and join a fitness class, try a few out and get a feel for them. Most gyms and fitness centers have introductory offers, so try them on for size and find your favorite dance. You’ll be glad you did!
