Sleep is something that a lot of us take for granted and it is not until you cannot sleep properly, that you realise the effects of a lack of sleep. There are a variety of different disorders that can affect your sleeping patterns, such as insomnia or sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a common illness that although is incurable, there are different treatments available that can help you to sleep soundly at night.

Getting Medical Advice

If you are having problems sleeping properly and this has been going on for a sustained period, it is important that you seek professional medical advice before you try any machines or treatments to help you sleep. Getting diagnosed correctly is important to make sure that you can choose the most effective treatment for your condition. Once you have been diagnosed, you can then seek a recommendation on the best treatment. A general medical practitioner may be able to offer advice or drugs to help you sleep, but it will be best seeking help from a professional that deals with sleeping disorders.

Machines for Obstructed Sleep Apnea

A common sleeping disorder is obstructed sleep apnea, and this is where the muscles relax allowing the tongue or fatty tissue in the throat to collapse and block off the airways. One of the most efficient ways to treat this disorder is through Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, which is also known as CPAP. CPAP Machines deliver a continuous stream of air pressure which prevents the airways from collapsing. This type of machine works for a lot of people who suffer from this sleeping disorder, but there are also alternatives out there if this does not seem right to you.

Other Equipment

A common device that is used is a mouthpiece or mouth guard, which keeps the tongue in place, preventing it from falling backwards and blocking the airways. As well as being a cheaper alternative, many people find this a less obtrusive treatment for their sleeping disorder, which makes it a popular choice.

Aside from CPAP machines and mouthpiece, there are also other sleep apnea treatment options available, that can be used effectively to combat obstructed sleep apnea such as:

  • Automatic positive airway pressure (APAP)
  • Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP)
  • Tongue retaining mouthpieces
  • Mandibular advancement devices (MADs)

Available Surgeries

Although sleep apnea is not a curable condition, there are surgeries available for the people who suffer from sleep apnea. As the condition cannot be cured, surgeries are usually a last resort and the procedures usually offered are as follows:

  • Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA)
  • Nasal Surgery
  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)
  • Adenotonsillectomy

Before you even consider having surgery, it is advisable to try all the other none invasive treatments that are available. When you have exhausted all other alternatives, you may wish to consider surgery, as long as it is recommended by your doctor. With a bit of luck, you will be able to get a restful night’s sleep at last, which will also help you to stay healthy.
