The ability to fall asleep can be one that’s elusive for many people, leading them to try anything to get rest.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there are about 40 million people who have a long-term, chronic sleep disorder. In addition to that, it’s estimated about 20 million people suffer from occasional sleep problems. The CDC also released a recent study showing more than 1/3 of all adults in America aren’t getting enough sleep.
Rather than turning to sleep medications as the first-line remedy, there are things you can do in your home that can help you and your family get more restful sleep, starting with your bedroom.
The following are some bedroom design tips that may help promote better sleep.
Comfort
The first thing to think about is your overall comfort. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to the ideal be setup, but if you feel like your mattress, pillows or bedding isn’t up to par for what you like, it may be time to invest in something new.
If you regularly wake up feeling achy, your mattress is relatively old, or your bed or bedding have signs of wear and tear, it’s definitely time for something new.
Organization
If your bedroom always looks like a wreck, it may actually be impeding your sleep. It’s important to feel calm and relaxed when you’re about to fall asleep, and a dirty, disorganized or chaotic bedroom isn’t going to help you achieve that feeling of bliss.
If you feel like your bedroom is cluttered and messy, do an audit, see what you can get rid of and then work on organizing everything else. Less is definitely more in terms of promoting a comfortable bedroom design.
Light
The best environment to fall asleep in is one that’s completely dark. That may mean getting rid of glowing electronics or investing in heavy-duty window coverings.
If you live in an apartment or a big city where it’s pretty hard to block all light out, or you have a spouse who has a different sleep schedule than you, think about wearing a sleep mask at night to keep out all that light.
Color and Décor
If you love the way your bedroom not only feels but also looks, it’s more likely to promote healthy sleep habits. You might want to give your room a design makeover, and focus on soothing color palettes that you enjoy.
You can also choose fabrics that are breathable and feel good to the touch, and try to layer plush bedding pillows for that luxurious feeling you get from visiting a hotel.
When you’re selecting a color palette, try to avoid very bold and vibrant colors like orange or red, because they can leave you feeling more awake than you would normally or even anxious.
Creating a beautiful, organized and peaceful bedroom design isn’t just a fun home project. It can also be the first step you need to take to get more sleep and optimize your life.
