When a spill happens, it is important to act immediately to prevent permanent stains. These methods use materials you will already have on-hand. Always begin with the same protocol. Carefully remove any solid material. Use a clean, dry cloth to blot up as much liquid as you can from the outside in. Then, follow one of the follow five approaches based on the kind of stain.
Water-Soluble Stains
Soda, drinks made from mixes, berries and washable ink can be lifted with the help of vinegar and an iron. Use a mixture of one part vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture over the stain, and then cover the area with a damp, terry cloth towel. Press an iron heated to its highest steam setting on top. The stain will lift up into the towel.
Grease and Oil
Sprinkle the area with baking soda or cornstarch and let it sit overnight. Vacuum it up the next day. If any staining remains, drape a clean, dry cloth on top of it and press with a hot, dry iron.
Blood, Juice and Red Wine
The key to eliminating these difficult stains is to dilute them immediately. Use club soda, water or even white wine, and then blot it up. Repeat until no more color can be lifted.
Chocolate, Coffee, Dirt and Tomato Sauce
Add a teaspoon of liquid dish detergent to a cup of cold water. Spray the area, and then use a dry cloth to blot it up. Repeat until the stain is gone. If the detergent solution does not work, a tablespoon of ammonia in a cup of water will remove stains from most synthetic carpeting. Pet Accidents
Even old pet stains can be removed using baking soda and vinegar. Saturate the stained area with vinegar. Shake a heavy layer of baking soda over top, and cover the area with a plate or towel while it dries. When it is completely dry, vacuum the baking soda away.
If you use a detergent solution, remember to rinse the detergent out of the carpet before it dries. Speed up drying times for any method using a fan. These methods will help you tackle small, everyday stains and keep your carpet looking great in between thorough cleanings.
