If you are looking to do more with your outdoor space this spring, then it is a pretty exciting prospect. When you can make the room more like a room in the home, then weather permitting, you can enjoy the great outdoors much more. But often it is neglected, and not cleaned up or tidied as much as room indoors is. But if you want to create a space for the children to play in or for you to relax in, then being able to landscape your garden and yard is a good way to go. But where do you start if you are new to landscaping and have not had to deal with anything like this before? Here are some tips and tricks to get you started.
Start Your Design
When you’re looking to start your design, then you need to consider things like the boundaries to your space first. So look at hedges, fencing, pathways, and any other things that are out there like sheds or outbuildings. From there you can start to plan a layout that is going to work with what you already have, and work with the shape and space that is there.
Consider The Plot
So you’ve looked at what is already there and the size and shape. But from there, you need to think about the direction your garden faces and also consider the size and style of your house. If you have an older home, for example, then a super modern and styled garden might look a little out of place. Likewise, a classic looking garden could look out of place with an ultra-modern looking home. Do you prefer a formal look to the garden with clearly defined paths and shrubs, or does a more informal look suit your preference?
Think About Trees and Plants
Once you know how styled you want the garden to be, you can start thinking about the trees and plants that you would like planted. Think about if you want to create some privacy with the trees you plant, or want to define pathways with shrubs or frame doors. Some trees like orchid trees can offer long-lasting beauty to a landscaped garden, as well as color. So think about what you want to achieve with the plants and shrubs that you choose.
Plan Materials
Of course, for a landscaped garden, you are likely to need a few more things to help you achieve the look that you are after. For instance, bricks, decking, and other timber might be needed if you’re wanting to build a small support wall in the yard or create a relaxing decking space, or want to make a pathway through the garden on timber. Having some sketches out is a good idea, along with measurements. Then you can have an accurate idea about the quantity of materials that you will need for the project.
You need to consider how to best preserve the longevity of the materials that you’re using, as well. For instance, if you’re planning to use wood, then varnish and protective coating can ensure that rain doesn’t rot it, and a 6×6 vinyl post sleeve for fence posts can protect them from the contamination that can rise up from the soil, as well. Concrete, stone, and other materials each have their own steps to protect them, too. Do your research on the care your materials need.
