National Pet Day. Isn’t it absolutely wonderful that our entire nation has devoted an entire day to loving on our pets and helping to raise awareness to the pet population in America?
Much love goes out to Pet Day USA which was founded in 2005 by Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert Colleen Paige. Excerpt from the Pet Day USA website:
…to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters all across the nation. Almost any non-exotic animal you can think of, from dogs and cats, to small animals, farm, reptile and avian … there are pets who need your love.
Laws are changing and more and more U.S. shelters are changing to no-kill shelters, but there are still many out there who put these beautiful animals to sleep every day simply because they have no one to give them a forever home and care for them.
How Can I Help?
I’ve asked myself this so many times. What can I possibly do to help these animals? I don’t have room for another pet in our home, I cannot volunteer my time on a regular basis, so what’s left for me to do?
Think about this – every day you spend money at one or more of these items or locations:
- Coffee Shop
- Beauty Salon
- Movies
- Clothing / Handbag Shops
- Vacations
- Sports Gear
- Junk Food
I’m a coffee addict, and I love nothing more than popping in to our local Starbucks or McDonald’s and grabbing a hot cup of coffee that I did not have to make. It’s a treat.
Imagine taking that same amount of money and donating it the spay/neuter programs of your local shelters and rescues or to help with food expenses to feed all the animals, or to help pay the veterinarian bills for the animals that come in beaten, abused, emaciated.
If a million people donated just $1.00 per month that would amount to $12 million dollars per year raised to help shelters across the nation. Think of how much that would change the world for unwanted pets. Not purchasing or consuming even just one of the items mentioned above, 1 day out of each month. It’s that easy and nothing will make you feel more happy, more beautiful or more whole, than saving a life.
Rio 2 opens in theatres today which suggests the gorgeous exotic animals. Please leave them in the habitat they were born in. There are more than enough wonderful animals that need good homes waiting for you to take them to their forever home in a shelter or rescue near you!
Meet Mollyanna
Mollyanna (Molly or Mo-Mo for short) is our little Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix that has been a part of our family for the past 6 years. She will be 7 years old on November 3, 2014 and is the most loved, spoiled rotten little pooch on the face of the planet. She has her own bed, yet she prefers sleeping on MY side of the bed. Either under my pillow or with her feet on my pillow.
She has her “spot” on the couch (exactly like our beloved Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory) and will stand there and stare at you until you move if you are in it.
Every morning, she jumps up on Jonathan’s bed when I tell her it is time to get him up and will go nose-to-nose and cover his face with kisses till she wakes him up. (beats me having to scream at him to get up)
She’s been featured in a news story about the death of one Marty McMole. She will also curse you out in a heartbeat. She’s awesome like that … and we wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world.
She had her spa day today – we took her to the groomers and she got herself a bath and her booty scrunched and her nails done – and she came prancing home like the little queen that she is and promptly curled up on the couch to watch some television.
I wish all dogs could know that kind of love.
