Having a real, comfortable home to come back to after a long day at work, having a place to raise a family, or to truly be yourself, is important. Sometimes, the property can feel more like just somewhere to sleep rather than an actual home, but there are some easy fixes that you can make that will make the place you’re in, whether you rent it or own it, feel like a real home that you can enjoy for as long as you want to. Here are some of them.
Fix The Squeaks
Little annoyances around the house, such as squeaking doors, can, over time, become a much bigger problem than they need to be. They can make people (those who live in the property and guests too) feel uncomfortable and can even mean that some rooms are used a lot less than they could be because of the irritating squeak whenever the door is opened or closed.
Fixing these squeaks is incredibly easy, and you don’t need to have a lot of DIY know-how in order to do it. You can buy a special lubricant which you can spray into the hinges to stop the squeaking. If you prefer, petroleum jelly will do the same job. For really stubborn squeaks, you may have to lift the hinge pins out a little way and use some three-in-one oil (make sure you put newspaper down on the door to stop your carpet from being ruined).
A squeaky floor can be just as annoying as a squeaky door. If you can get to the floorboards, you can sprinkle some talcum powder over them then sweep the powder into the cracks. If you can’t get to the floorboards because of a carpet in the way, it may require the carpet to be taken up so the squeak can be fixed and then expert carpet installation to put things right again.
Peeling Wallpaper
Nothing says unloved like peeling wallpaper. It gives the impression that your home is uncared for and unkempt, even if that is far from the truth. Thankfully, you can fix peeling wallpaper quickly, and you’ll be amazed at the difference it will make to the room in general. All you need to do is smear some wallpaper paste on the peeling piece and then carefully smooth it back up onto the wall. If there are any bubbles, you will need to remove them using a soft brush swept across the wallpaper. Only use a small amount of paste otherwise it will spill out onto the rest of the wallpaper and make it look messy again.
Stained Tub
You know your bathtub is clean because you have cleaned it yourself. Yet stains still remain, and these stains make the tub – and the rest of the bathroom – look dirty. To remove these stains, combine equal amounts of baking soda and cream of tartar and then squeeze lemon juice into the mixture to make a paste.
Once you have your paste, rub it into the stains with a soft cloth (or you can use your fingers but remember to wash them well afterward). Leave it for 30 minutes, and then rinse it away. Your tub should be clean and sparkling once you’re done, and your house will feel so much more like home.
This is great information. We bought an older house. We are slowly renovating.
Some great tips here! I am one of these people that everything has a place. I have got my great niece trained that eveything she plays with goes back in its place at the end of the day.
