I was trolling the internet last night looking for advice on how to break into the writer market. I’ve always loved to write stories, ever since I was a child, or take a real life experience and weave it into a story. The girls in my design group always liked my little stories I wrote about my kids, which encouraged me to start putting them online, which developed into the blog and the rest, as they say, is history.
So I need a portfolio. And writing samples. So I decided to write a short story, a magazine article and an essay piece about a recent world event to kind of round out my portfolio. I sat down last night and just started writing. No idea where I was headed or what the story was about, and within an hour’s time I had handwritten ten pages. Wow.
I haven’t actually sat down and wrote anything by hand in years. Everything I’ve written has been on the computer and, while it may not seem like a big difference, trust me, there is.
The pen scratching on the paper is cathartic almost. It allows your mind to really dig into the characters and the story you are writing and things just seem to flow so much easier. I didn’t want to put it down last night.
I’m not sure where it is going or how it will end, but so far it is turning out to be about a precocious little girl named Kasey who is 7 years old and angels. I’ll let you all know when it’s finished!!!
I also need to work on my design portfolio. I need to put together a web site that I created completely on my own including graphics and links and all of that with no assistance so I’ll be working on that in the next few days as well. Plus putting together some of the graphic work I’ve done that I’m really proud of and showcasing that as well.
I feel like I’m on the verge of something great here, like a door is about to be flung wide open for me.
Keep your fingers crossed!
