Water-Soluble Stains

Soda, drinks made from mixes, berries and washable ink can be lifted with the help of vinegar and an iron. Use a mixture of one part vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture over the stain, and then cover the area with a damp, terry cloth towel. Press an iron heated to its highest steam setting on top. The stain will lift up into the towel.

Grease and Oil

Sprinkle the area with baking soda or cornstarch and let it sit overnight. Vacuum it up the next day. If any staining remains, drape a clean, dry cloth on top of it and press with a hot, dry iron.

Blood, Juice and Red Wine

The key to eliminating these difficult stains is to dilute them immediately. Use club soda, water or even white wine, and then blot it up. Repeat until no more color can be lifted.

Chocolate, Coffee, Dirt and Tomato Sauce

Add a teaspoon of liquid dish detergent to a cup of cold water. Spray the area, and then use a dry cloth to blot it up. Repeat until the stain is gone. If the detergent solution does not work, a tablespoon of ammonia in a cup of water will remove stains from most synthetic carpeting.
