Your home is your castle. It is the place where you go to be safe from the dangers of the outside world. However, your home may be harboring secret dangers that could harm you and your family. You need to be vigilant to protect your loved ones from the threats that they can face even in your own home. Here are five hidden dangers that you should be on the lookout for in your home.

Mold

It is only rather recently that mold has started to be on the radar as far as a major health concern. Mold can breed out of sight in your walls, and it can cause all kinds of health problems once it is there. You should inspect your home regularly to look for mold. If your home is susceptible to mold, you can help prevent it by using a dehumidifier.

Dust Mites

Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feed on our own dead skin cells. When they die, they fall into your home‘s environment. They can then cause allergies and breathing problems when you inhale them. Though there is no way to get rid of dust mites permanently, you can make sure their presence in your home is reduced by always keeping things clean.

Insects

There are many types of insects that can cause health problems. Cockroaches are especially known for spreading disease. They often hide away during the day, coming out at night to raid your food and spread germs.

Carpet Chemicals

That new carpet smell is nothing to be proud of. That smell is actually toxic chemicals leaching off the carpet. It can cause headaches in people who are sensitive to it. You can get rid of that smell as fast as possible by keeping the room well-ventilated after the carpet is installed.

Medications

Kids can easily mistake medicine tablets and capsules for candy. This could be a devastating situation if it happens. Make sure to always keep medicine out of the reach of your kids. When you have teens, you may want to lock up the medicine cabinet to keep curious teens from abusing prescription medication.

  1. I know exactly what you mean, Cheryl! Hubby tells me all the time that I need to stop walking around with my "head in the clouds" and be more aware of my surroundings. Makes me sad when I watch the news during the holidays and see all the stories about people having their cars broken into or being robbed and cleaned out of all their Christmas presents they've purchased. That's one thing we don't have to worry about … Christmas is going to be might meager around these parts this year I'm afraid. 🙁
