One of the great things about my husband working in the property management industry is that we literally can live anywhere his company owns a property.
If there is a unit available, we can usually live at the property his company owns, and he’s just a few steps away from work every day. Other times, we need to look elsewhere for a home or apartment within 30 minutes of the property. Not an easy feat to accomplish when you are currently several hundred miles away from your prospective new home.
Several years ago when I was freelancing as a leasing consultant, I came across this handy website called Zumper. To this day it continues to be one of my favorites when looking for a place to rent – whether it be locally or several hundred miles away.
Zumper gives you everything you need right at your fingertips – whether you are looking for a house, room, condo, or apartment for rent. You can filter your search by location, price range, bedroom/bathroom count, amenities, whether the community is pet-friendly or not, and then just save your tailored search. Each day you receive an alert when a new item is available that meets your search criteria – saves you from spending hours online going from website to website to find the home you are looking for.

You get all the information you could want about a particular area in town right at your fingertips. You get a listing of schools available near you, the walking score (for those that love the ability to walk to work, restaurants, theater, entertainment, pubs, etc.), what types of public transportation is available and more. At the bottom of the listing you click on, they also share similar apartments in the area as well if the one you clicked wasn’t exactly what you were looking for. No need to go back to the beginning and start over.

For instance, say you visited Chicago, IL and found a great neighborhood that you fell in love with. A personal favorite of mine is the Gold Coast Historic District.The neighborhood boasts a deep history, and gained an early reputation of affluence and luxury. It maintains this prestige, ranking as one of the most expensive areas of Chicago, and you’re liable to run into a few celebrities while you’re in the area!
If I win the lottery, most definitely will find Life in a House headquarters moving to one of these beautiful brownstones on North Astor Street, available to rent for ‘only’ $16,000 a month. You have to admit, it’s a beautiful, spacious home!
