Life in a House of Testosterone has partnered with Propeller Consulting, LLC to bring you today’s conversation. We were sent a promotional item as a thank you for our posting. All opinions stated are my own.
I’ve got three children. I’ve done “the talk” with one, my daughter. Dad took care of having “the talk” with our eldest son. Then I heard about this really cool Passport 2 Purity Weekend Kit by Dennis and Barbara Rainey and decided to use this to have “the talk” with my youngest son.
Let’s face it, having “the talk” with your kids is HARD. No matter how many children you have, each of them will respond differently to the topics that you’ll be discussing. I had no idea when the “right” time would be to broach the subject with the boys, and just sort of hovered and watched until I thought it was time – only to find out that hubby had already had the talk with our eldest son.
The Passport2Purity kit (P2P) is designed to be used by a mother and daughter, or a father and son, when the child is a preteen. Perfect timing for my 12-year-old. The ideal way to utilize this kit is a special weekend getaway for just that parent and child, someplace that they are extremely excited to be visiting – but if this isn’t possible, you can complete the material at home over the weekend or a period of a few weeks. You know your child best and what will work best for them.
The P2P materials are amazing. Everything you need is included:
- Tour Guide for Mom or Dad
- Travel Journal for the Preteen that includes 25 follow-up devotions
- (8) CDs containing 5 sessions, scripture memory songs and downloadable MP3’s
- Session 1: Beginning the Journey – Challenges, Traps, and Choices
- Session 2: Running with the Herd – Friendships and Peer Pressure
- Session 3: Ready for an Upgrade? – Changes in Him, Changes in Her
- Session 4: Destination: Lé Pure – Setting Boundaries
- Session 5: Crossing the Date Line – Seeing Dating Differently

I love the journal. It is full of interesting facts, photographs, bible verses, and places for your child to write down what they are thinking at that particular moment about the session and topic you are working on. I decided to do the P2P kit with my youngest son. While he didn’t say anything about it – I could tell he was intrigued with the journal and has flipped through it several times since we’ve completed it reading over different things that he wrote and looking up some of the different bible verses that spoke to him.
My kids are not experiencing the adolescence that I did growing up over 35 years ago. Our world now is entirely different than it was years ago. I cannot begin to tell you how often I wished I could be raising my family during that time period versus the world that we live in now.
They begin their journey into becoming an adolescent with sexting, bullying, cyber stalking, sexual content and innuendo via the music they hear on the radio and the shows that they see on the television. It’s a world where innocence is under attack, and winning the battle to help keep them innocent is not going to be done with one single awkward talk or a strict set of rules. (Trust me, I know, the strict rules alone simply DO NOT WORK. Been there done that and failed miserably!)
The P2P kit gives you a parent checklist of things you’ll need (it really does cover everything so you don’t forget a single thing!) to make the weekend great, including all the materials you’ll need to complete the projects as well that are included in the CDs.
The CDs are the best. I have to admit, when I first opened up the package from FamilyLife and started to check out everything included to help me build some heart-to-heart communication between my youngest and my last, I thought to myself, “There is absolutely no way that he is going to sit here and listen to these CDs with me. He’ll be out the door in 5 minutes.” Dennis and Barbara have done a phenomenal job in making the CDs entertaining with a variety of voices and scenarios – they truly are a joy to listen to and over before you realize it!
My youngest and I had a great time utilizing the Passport2Purity kit, and I am so thankful that I had the chance to sit down and talk with him about the hundreds of questions that he had but didn’t know how to ask! I also feel closer to him, having shared this experience with him, and we both have a stronger relationship with God because of it. While I’m not so sure that I’m ready to undergo an onslaught of the turbulent years ahead for him (and the last for me as a mother), I know that he has been guided well and that we both have an arsenal of biblical teachings at our disposal to help cross any obstacles that we might face in the future.
