When I was a young girl, my parents decided to build our dream home. We each had input into where and how we wanted our home to look. Dad and Mom had the plans drawn up and the four of us built that home from the ground up as a family. No contractors, no additional help, just us.
If you are in the fortunate position of being able to design your own home, then you will certainly want to make sure that you end up with a home that is as perfect for you as is possible. Of course, there is so much that goes into designing the perfect home, and it is something that most people will find somewhat challenging at the best of times. But as long as you are aware of the kinds of decisions that you need to make in order to get it right, you should find it goes to plan much more readily.
The Doors & Windows
You will really have to start from the basics and work your way up, and one of the fundamental parts of the structure of your home is going to be the doors and windows. These are important not just for the safety and security of the home, but for the fact that they say a lot about the design and decor, and therefore the early decisions you make here are going to prove to be hugely relevant later on. Whether you go for a double-hung window from Fenster USA or you want to go down a completely different route, just make sure that you know your options.
Scale
Probably one of the very first decisions you will have to make is how big to make the house. As long as you get a decent scale on the home, you will find that you are going to have much more of a chance of being happy with the end result, so this is something that you will certainly want to get right. Much of this will be dictated by the financial position you find yourself in, of course, but there might be a chance for you to play around a little with a few different sizes. Just make sure that it is appropriate for your needs.
Basic Materials
There must be a thousand and one ways to build a house, and much of the difference has to do with what materials you use. You need to make this decision early, and if you have never had cause to look into the different materials before then you might find that it is all a little overwhelming. At the highly ecological end of the scale, you have the option of building your home with cob, which is basically just mud. At the other end, you could go for a sleekly modern look with wooden beams everywhere. It’s entirely up to you, but you do need to be sure of what you want.
Decor
Finally, you will have to think about the decor too. However, this is something that is going to be easier if you are considering it from the very start, so that is something that you should bear in mind as well. The more thought you have put into your decor, the more likely it is that the end result will be truly stunning.
As I learned at a young age, building your own home requires plenty of thought and planning ahead of time – and learning! My dad learned everything he needed to about electrical wiring, installing drywall and sheetrock, plumbing, and so much more. The end result, however, was something we were each supremely proud of. Home was more than a place to us, it was something that love and hard work built.
