Tips to Avoid Being Scammed

I’m so sick and tired of scammers. I’m getting ready to put them all on blast right here! Text messages, emails, scammers online, etc. If you’ve been scammed – send me the info and I’ll add them here!

Text Scammers

Below is a Google Doc listing of telephone numbers that have sent me scam text messages. I’ve done the research to find out who the numbers belong to, and who their cellular carriers are.

In addition, I have provided their name and address or whatever information was legally available through WhitePages.com. This list will be updated continuously.

TikTok Scammers

Social media has become fraught with scammers, and TikTok is no exception. I had this lady going by @mommyuxu213 try to scam me the past few days. I love messing with scammers.

She claimed to be a Christian and have a caring heart and just wanted to bless people randomly this holiday season. That alone sent red flags up for me because I have NEVER known anyone who wants to just give away money just because to random strangers on the internet. Remember – if it sounds too good to be true…it is!

Yeah so in order to GET any money from her I first had to SEND her money. SCAM. You should never have to pay to get money from anywhere. She has been reported to TikTok.

Gift Card Scammers

I stopped at a local grocery store near where I work yesterday, and there was an elderly man in line in front of me. He looked to be in his late 70s early 80s. He was desperately attempting to purchase (2) gift cards in the amount of $500 each. He had told the cashier that one of his grandson’s friends had called him and told him he was in jail and needed the money for bail. He said his grandson had asked him to call his grandfather and see if he could get two gift cards of $500 each and then read the information off the back to his friend who would then come and pay his bail to get him out of jail.

The cashier, the manager of the grocery store, another elderly man in line, and myself – we all pleaded with him not to do it. We told him to call his grandson and speak to him first – he stated he tried and he wasn’t getting any answer so he ‘must have been in jail if he wasn’t answering his phone’ and he couldn’t wait. The manager and the cashier kept telling him he would NOT be able to get his money refunded, that he was being scammed, that he needed to just wait and talk to his other family members – he would not listen. It was so upsetting to see the fear in his eyes and hear his voice quiver when he spoke about his grandson being a good boy and not deserving to be in jail because he was sure he had not done anything. The manager had no choice but to sell him the gift cards and we all just took a moment to stop and realize how vulnerable some of our seniors can be when it comes to family and not being technologically-savvy to the scams that happen every day.

As I was driving back to work I wanted to pinch myself for not remembering there was a police station just a minute away from the grocery store – we could have asked the manager to call the police and have them come talk to him before he left the store, but it was too late.

What To Do If You Gave a Gift Card to a Scammer

If you bought a gift card and gave someone the numbers off the back of the card, that’s a scam. Use your gift card and gift card store receipt for these next steps:

  • Report the gift card scam to the gift card company right away. No matter how long ago the scam happened, report it. Use the How To Contact Gift Card Companies list below.
  • Ask for your money back. Some companies are helping stop gift card scams and might give your money back. It’s worth asking.
  • Tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Every report makes a difference.

You can find more information on their website here – https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/avoiding-and-reporting-gift-card-scams.

I will continue to list scammers on this page as they contact me or I learn more about them via other avenues.
